Welcome to 5th North Devon (Bishops Tawton) Scout Group
We operate from our Scout HQ situated at the base of Codden Hill in Bishops Tawton and draw young people from Landkey, Swimbridge, Newport, Whiddon Valley, Bishops Tawton, Bratton Fleming and the surrounding areas.
Adventure is at the heart of everything we do. It is the single most important thing that sets Scouts apart.
Through the everyday adventure of Scouting, young people and adult volunteers regularly experience new challenges that enrich their lives.
5TH NORTH DEVON SCOUTS
To develop a Scout Group, that our members are proud of by providing a quality balanced programme, positive environment, Young Leaders programme and active Leader recruitment, and remain at the centre of the community by being involved in community activities and involving local groups and charities within the scouting programme.
Scouting uses a Method, which is young people, in partnership with adults:
- enjoying what they are doing
- learning by doing
- participating in varied and progressive activities
- making choices for themselves
- taking responsibility for their own actions
- working in groups
- taking increasing responsibility for others
- taking part in outdoor activities
- sharing in prayer and worship
- making and living their Promise.
We are lucky enough to have our own Scout Headquarters – but this costs money to run – including rates, electricity, gas and general maintenance.
Raising funds is a vital part of keeping the group going. The cost of repairing and replacing group equipment, the repair and upkeep of our HQ and the land it sits on all come of the funds that our supporters raise.
5th North Devon (Bishops Tawton) Scout Group is 100% run by volunteers. Although all adults involved give their time freely, there are costs involved in running a Scout Group. Annually the Group pays a subscription to the Scout Association which covers all necessary insurances for both the young people and the adults to participate and run scouting events (including the regular scouting evening sessions), in addition, there are the costs of badges and the cost of equipment/consumables needed for the evening sessions.
Scout Active Support
Scout Active Support allows people to give their time to Scouting on a flexible basis. People can still be involved in Scouting without the full-time commitment of being a leader.
Essentially the 5th North Devon (Bishops Tawton) Scout Groups – Group Scout Active Support Unit (GSASU) is a group of adults who wish in some way to provide ‘active support’ to the group. GSASU can be made up of men and women of all ages, interests and backgrounds, whether or not they have been involved with Scouting or Guiding before. All members of GSASU are there because they wish to give some of their time to Scouting – this can be as much or as little as they like, in a wide variety of activities.
The aim of GSASU is to “Provide Active Support”, with the emphasis being very much on practical support of the groups youth programme
Active Support around the country regularly gets involved in event organisation and support, adventurous activity provision, fundraising, supporting Section Leaders, providing social activities for the Group, skills based sessions and training. In fact ‘active support’ can be just about anything, the list is endless.
Active Support is a large part of the ‘backbone’ of the Group – supporting the young people and voluntary leaders wherever help is required. The key our success is flexibility.
